Review: Typhoon Hardwares Butter Churner

I recently saw this Typhoon Hardwares Butter Churner on Food 52, I purchased it right away.  Growing up one of my neighborhood friends taught us to make butter from scratch and it was always a memory of being the best thing I ever had.  Not sure if it was because I created it or it was just really good.   Seeing the butter churner I had to try it again.   About 2 weeks later it arrived to my home.

The process is really easy and takes about 15 minutes of churning.  There are a couple of steps to get it to the stage

of ready to use but I would say 2 and a half hours altogether.  (Two of which is letting the cream sit out, so not a lot of labor.)   The butter was creamy and the butter churner came with a couple of ideas for flavored butters which I am anxious to try.  Definitely  worth the money and I think I would invest in the wood paddles which I had not purchased.

City Outing: Portland Night Market

Portland Night Market

We recently went to a local event called Night Market.  This was a two day event that had 175+ vendors and a variety of food and drinks that only happens quarterly.

Outside in a gated area they had several food carts and a bar.  A DJ played music while people sampled the different food options. The food choices were plentiful and we sampled:

Pip’s Original Donuts- always delicious, and don’t forget their chai.

Boke Bowl-Steamed buns with Mushrooms, so delicious.  I could eat this everyday for a year.

Tight Tacos- so good we’re looking to see where we can get there tacos again

Le Bistro Montage-Cajun Mac and Cheese which was rich and creamy.  They also had the best hush puppies I have tried.

Kim Jong Grillin- we just had a beef kabob to snack on but it was very tender and yummy.

There were a variety of vendors specializing anywhere from clothes to local distilleries.  Expect a crowd, but it’s worth the fun.  We found a Gin distillery that we both bought from.   I saw some of the cutest planters not to mention a bunch of different food and drink options you could buy and take home.  This was a very entertaining event and I can’t wait for the next one.

For upcoming dates check Portland Night Market.

We love to find new things or interesting takes on ideas,.  Here is our five favorite things of the week.

Perfect for traveling a Cold Brew Coffee Maker and Carafe

For a migraine cure, Healthy Holistic Living suggests green apple sliced with a sprinkle of salt alongside a glass of warm water. Will have to give this a try.

88 DIY stocking stuffers, love the walnut packaging.  I know this is for Christmas but some of the ideas would be cute in Easter baskets or personalized gifts.

I had a friend growing up that taught me how to make homemade butter, it was time consuming but it tasted so good.  Just found this butter churner and I am getting it.

20 Easter Centerpiece Ideas that are too cute and look pretty easy to do.

Restaurant Outing: Midpoint

Midpoint is one of our favorite breakfast spots.    Located off of 52nd and Powell, it is a small little cafe filled with quirky decor and an elevated home cooking feel.

On our most recent outing my husband enjoyed their Red Eye Flight.  The Red Eye Flight is made with Mono on rocks, served with shots of bloody Mary mix, grapefruit and orange juice.

Their menu has a variety of options and they do have a lunch menu that is really good.  They make a fabulous fork mashed potatoes that are one of my favorite takes on breakfast potatoes.

After taking a peruse of the specials I had the Granola French Toast with a blueberry compote.  This was phenomenal.  It was sweet and the granola kicks the french toast up a notch

.   They also have excellent coffee which is a must for morning outings in our household.  Highly recommend.

Epicurious has a great tip on the easiest way to get thyme off of its stick.

Interesting article on the 21 most overlooked Oscar Directors.   There are some big surprises there.

This Stranger Things Charm Bracelet is so fun, I am going to have to get this so I can wear it while binging on the next season.

These Recycled Bamboo & Cork Canisters are fabulous looking, would go perfectly with my fiesta ware.

Estate Sale Finds

My husband and I love to go to estate sales on the weekend. We’re always on the lookout for a hidden gem.  On our latest outing we found an architectural piece that fits perfectly over our doorway.  It was too expensive so we actually put a bid on it in the bid box.  This was the first time we had ever done this, so we we’re pretty excited to hear we had won the bid.

We think this piece is probably from a door frame.  Maybe from India, not sure.  We found some others online kinda similar from that area.  It was really hard getting a good picture of this, so I have to say this really does not do it justice.  Next time we like something, but don’t want to pay the full price we will definitely be putting a bid on the item again.  It paid off.

Fantasy Inspired Baby Shower

In November our family held a baby shower for my youngest daughter Sarah.   With a fantasy/Harry Potter type theme we came up with a festive shower with a brunch type menu that I wanted to share.  We love planning events with food to match the theme.

We created little snitches with Ferrero Rocher candy, decorated

with velum  and nestled them  in pink bassinets we found at Dollar tree.

The mantel had fairy silhouettes, a welcome muggle banner, and various fall decor.  A vintage over sized cardboard book was transformed into  a Harry Potter themed  centerpiece with clocks and cameras adding to the decorations .

The lamp above the food table was decorated with keys that had wings.

The Menu was inspired by English teas.  Listed below is what we made.

Cucumber and Dill Tea Sandwiches

Herbed Chicken Salad in puff pastry cups

Carmelized Onion Mushroom Gruyere Tartlets

Savory Cheese Thumbprint Cookies with Bourbon Tomato Jam

Caprese Skewers

Spinach Salad with candied pecans and feta, with a vinaigrette

Caramel Apple Cream Cheese Dip

Chex Mix

Grapes

Vegi Tray

Mini pineapple upside down cakes

Lemon Tartlets

Vanilla bean scones

Mini Chocolate Bundts w/ganache

We served a 7UP, lemonade and sherbert punch along with coffee, tea and apple cider

The whole family chipped in and made this event incredibly unique and wonderful.  We played a baby bingo game while presents were opened that was so much fun because everyone interacted with one another.

Looking forward to planning our next event which is a cookoff for Oscars.  The challenge is create a dish from a movie that either won or was nominated in a year ending in 8.  We will be sure to post some of our winning dishes after the event.
